- Ultrasound Group
- Ultrasound is an increasingly common tool in a variety of clinical settings (for rapid diagnostic purposes in emergency medicine, within hospitals and ambulances as well as remote settings) and general practice. NICE, for example, advises use of ultrasound when electively inserting central venous catheters and is currently considering its use in catheterisation of the epidural space. It is envisaged that today’s undergraduate students of medicine and professions allied to medicine will routinely encounter portable ultrasound in their clinical practice. CETL4healthNE have purchased eight Sonosite Portable Ultrasound kits, for four of the CETL University partners (two each). The equipment is now used being used in undergraduate and postgraduate anatomy teaching in medicine and in other healthcare professions around the North-East. Ultrasound provides a dynamic image and the students can therefore appreciate the living anatomy. Alongside contextualising anatomy teaching, one of our aims is to future-proof our students for working with Portable Ultrasound. An Ultrasound Users group is in operation to disseminate information, develop creative teaching and learning activities, to explore and troubleshoot practice and policy around implementing new initiatives, to evaluate and report our research findings. CETL4healthNE colleagues are invited to contribute to and participate in the activities of the Ultrasound Users group in order develop and widen the agenda for portable Ultrasound with the CETL4healthNE.
